Devotional #2

Holy Monday

Holy Monday is the second day of Holy Week, right after Palm Sunday.   It’s is the second day that Jesus was in Jerusalem.   Jesus was headed back to Jerusalem from Bethany, where he knew he would not feel welcomed as he debated with the religious leaders.   I am reminded of the Holiness of the Lord and how He went on my behalf.   I was unworthy and apart from Jesus would remain that way.  His blood was and is sufficient for me and He knew He was going to the cross for me.   I am reminded of an old song that said,

I had a debt I could not pay,
He paid the debt He did not owe,
I needed someone,
To wash my sins away.
And now I sing a brand new song,
“Amazing grace” all day long,
Christ Jesus paid the debt,
That I could never pay.
On the way back in to the city from Bethany, where Jesus and the twelve disciples spent the night, Jesus became hungry.   Seeing a fig tree with no fruit on it, though it was full of leaves and thus should have been full of fruit, Jesus spoke a curse on the tree.  Jesus went to the temple on Monday and confronted those making a profit off of the people coming to worship there.”   I believe this is a parable of instruction of our lives to the Lord and a warning, that if he would curse this tree, than our lives are also cursed, if we refuse to produce the fruit that is the love of Jesus flowing through us.    I also see that Jesus knew that the disciples would be weak without food so He desired to feed them.   Today he still feeds us through His word and in providing for our needs.

Matthew 21:12-13 is then quoted.

“Those who heard and witnessed Jesus’ miraculous healing that day sang praises to him, which caused authorities to begin looking for a way to kill him.   The Gospel of Luke says that “they could find no way to do it, because all the people hung on to his words. Luke 19:48

Holy Monday Prayer-  Jesus, you took on yourself our nature and suffered death on the cross for us.  By your love and passion, you have set us free from eternal death. I desire to hang on to your every word you speak to me and to glorify your name.   Thank you for your unfailing, unconditional love for me, for us.  I long for the day when I will see you face to face forever.  In Jesus name.  Amen.
